The concept of story is central to aboriginal (Native American) thought and philosophy. Our identity is contained in the story we live. When we are sick, we are living a story of illness. Within traditional healing, consideration of the story we live is crucial as well as consideration of the stories told by the illness and its manifestations. Our spirits and relatives also have stories to tell about us. Traditional healers work in part through transforming the story. They tell inspirational stories to let us know that we can change. They tell stories about overcoming hardship. Together they help us to revise and re-author the story we are living in the contexts of our communities into stories that are more conducive to health and wellbeing. This transformation will be the subject of this workshop.

After graduating from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1975, Dr. Madrona completed residencies in family medicine and in psychiatry at the University of Vermont College of Medicine and earned extra qualifications in geriatric medicine. He completed his Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the Psychological Studies Institute in Palo Alto, California, in 1980. He has served on medical faculties at Stanford University, the University of Pittsburgh, the University of Arizona, and currently, the University of Saskatchewan.

While still in medical school, Dr. Madrona became interested in aboriginal healing and alternative (to drugs and surgery) therapies.
