| ASTROCAST |
JANUARY 2003 — We enter the new year with the Sun and Mercury in Capricorn, Venus and Mars in Scorpio, Jupiter in Leo retrograde and Saturn in Gemini retrograde. On the 2d, Mercury, messenger god, will join the latter pair in retrograde activity. This means that the planets slow down slightly in their paths and appear to go backwards. Any activity associated with said planets is therefore negatively affected, although, of course, life goes on! Lessons and obstacles are presented and, hopefully, overcome. Sometimes things take a little longer to get going. Mercury rules the mind, dexterity, communications, contracts, mail/shipping, computers and much more. Jupiter represents the principle of growth, expansion, risk, optimism, travel, in-laws, spirituality and more. Saturn represents the father, Father Time, maturity/responsibility, status quo. Health wise, Mercury retrograde could cause trouble with the brain, eyes, hands or lungs. Jupiter retrograde could negatively affect sciatica, the liver and several other internal organs. Saturn retrograde primarily impacts teeth, knees and bones.

Back to Capricorn and Scorpio energy–both are determined, ambitious and very self-protective–even secretive. So, if you’re a passive person, try to catch the wave–but watch out for the human bulldozers out there!
The second day of the new year brings us a new moon at 12 degrees Capricorn. This is certainly a getting down to business energy, but also asks us to honor ancestors and the past. Planetary aspects make healing a priority, and a willingness to take a risk, try something new, ponder the future are all part of the picture.
Venus moves into Sagittarius on the 8th. This brings pleasant attention to Sagittarians, and enhances their charm and amiability. It can also boost the love life. Generally, this placement is a nice relief from the more intense, possessive Venus in Scorpio vibe of the past couple of months. Venus in Sagittarius loves dogs, horses and the outdoors. Spirituality, travel and nature are right up Sagittarius’ alley. It’s a breezy, comedic and altruistic sign. Buy a few blooming houseplants, take someone you barely know to lunch, take a road trip just for the heck of it.
This second week of January certainly has a serious note–a square between Mars in Scorpio and Uranus in Aquarius. The news could be full of international intrigue, pervasive illness, sexual misconduct and crime. On a more personal note, we might consider sticking together a bit more–breaking up selfishness and greed for the higher good. Mars is associated with sexuality and anger, so seeking healthy ways to release–including physical activity–is highly recommended. Mars is also associated with cleansing, so many will benefit from a fast or diet emphasizing fresh foods–for a day or a week. Uranus is wild, eccentric, electrical and inventive. Uranus will urge us to take a risk, try new things, expand our world and our friendship base. New technologies may appear. Certainly, your sexual partner (Mars in Scorpio) might express boredom and request a new technique or approach (Uranus in Aquarius).
This second week, take a personal inventory, be open to speaking with your partner about sexual preferences and tastes. Since anger is such a prevailing energy, don’t open up really incendiary issues with unstable folks, and keep an eye out for strangers with that crazed look in their eyes. Road rage is a definite threat!
Mars enters fiery, optimistic, athletic Sagittarius on the 18th. This serves to lighten the mood and officially breaks the square that formed with Uranus the week before. On the same day, the full moon in Cancer brings up issues related to home, family, emotion and career–and the delicate balance that keeps all these areas in harmony.
Mercury goes direct on the 23d, making communications, dexterity, thought, working with machines (even computers), and getting places on time much easier!
The last week of January could seem phlegmatic, slow-moving and foggy. Neptune symbolically casts clouds over the Sun. Lack of focus, dreaminess and inappropriate behavior can result. Take time to meditate, commune with nature, stay idealistic but work to be grounded as well. Let us hope that world leaders refrain from major decision-making this week, as many misguided choices can result.
Horoscope for Each Sign (read your ascendant, too, if you know that).
Aries (MAR 20 - APR 20):
You’re working hard to prove and improve yourself, perhaps bearing the burden at home or work–or both. It’s a time of responsibility, determination and transformation. The 2d’s new moon will make this point inescapable. Some things lighten up as fire energy begins moving in on the 8th, but your ruling planet (Mars) square Uranus the 2d week of the month can strain your sense of humor. This square certainly invites you to clear out the old, bring in the new–in a conscious way. No denial, please! Surely athletics, camping, travel and spiritual practice are on the menu. The full moon of the 18th asks you whether you have home, family and emotion in balance with the demands of your job? Watch out for colds and respiratory illnesses with Saturn retrograde in Gemini.
BACK TO TOP Taurus (APR 21 - MAY 21):
You’re in harmony with the earthy energies of Sun and Mercury in Capricorn. If you’re not too busy making money, you might enjoy a trip, outing or spiritual activity. However, the presence of Venus and Mars in Scorpio (opposite your Sun) and squaring Uranus (squaring your Sun) can be stimulating and sexy or invasive and weird. You can attract folks that are just strange or kinky, and not your cup of tea. You might need to discuss sexual needs openly with your partner so that a greater understanding can develop. Shared money is another potentially volatile subject that may need to be cleared up. Don’t be greedy, try to see another’s point of view, but be practical first. Later in the month, it’s a great time to clear out the basement, closets and storage units. Give away, recycle, have a garage sale. Carefully manage your time, as you will be prone to over-commit late month.
BACK TO TOP Gemini (MAY 22 - JUN 21):
Capricorn vibes stimulate you to release, forgive and transform psychologically. Do something to let your loved one know that you care–this is an act, not a material item. Be of service for one day, take over some of his or her chores if possible. The impact will stay with the relationship, for sure. The 2d week of January, bad feelings that are brewing–perhaps about sex or shared money–can rise to the surface. Take a walk or perform some other physical activity, be prepared to maturely discuss the situation, vent in a safe way, please! Sometimes just speaking the words is half the battle. Then resolution can occur. Venus and Mars moving into your opposite sign of Sagittarius can be flirty and good for romance or social life. You’ll be drawn to the arts and Eastern thought. Be alert for problems with the lungs this month–don’t let a cold or bronchitis linger.
BACK TO TOP Cancer (JUN 22 - JUL 22):
Astrological events of the month, especially the new and full moons of the 2d and 18th, ask you to balance yourself. Seek harmony in the areas of emotion, family and career. Try to bring these areas back into harmony if you feel an imbalance. It may be an emotional month, and you may need to rework your relationship a bit. Venus and Mars are on your side early January, helping to lift up and illuminate love matters. However, the Mars/Uranus square the second week of the month would stress anyone! Be kind, loving and willing to let go of that which no longer works. You’re likely to travel, enjoy nature, and involve yourself in spiritual practice this month. Late in the period, parents and career take center stage. You might feel idealistic and inspired, but can be dreamy and prone to mistakes. Work to stay grounded and centered the last week. Take good care of your lungs, feet and digestive system, and don’t let any problem with them last too long without assistance.
BACK TO TOP Leo (JUL 23 - AUG 22):
Your health can be a challenging area this month, due partly to built-up anger and nervousness. Do what you can to address this, be sure to vent anger safely, perhaps partly through physical exercise. Expressing yourself through dance and motion could be quite helpful. Relationships are highly accented, and actions will speak louder than words here. Be willing to talk things through, carefully voicing your emotions. Spending some quiet, private time with a spouse or friend can be real good medicine. Cook a special meal, share a hot tub or massage. Look through old photographs. As Venus and Mars come into fire signs the 8th and 18th, they offset some problems by adding a lift and inspiration. Be especially careful in the health and work areas around the 18th’s full moon. Late January, Aquarius energy accents balance and harmony–within yourself and with others.
BACK TO TOP Virgo (AUG 23 - SEPT 22):
If your feelings have been hurt by another, this is probably the time it will come out–especially the second week of the month. It’s possible it’s the other way around as well. Honor the other person and yourself, be ready to discuss the situation without blowing up! In general, you really must watch your choice of words this month–your criticism can be scathing. On a lighter note, you’re content with the reigning Capricorn vibes, another earth sign. Romance or just plain fun is a possible benefit. As planets move into Sagittarius and Aquarius later in the month, you attempt to balance the demands of home with the needs of the workplace. This is a big theme for everyone this period, and you’ll feel it in a big way. Try to attain a comfortable mix for yourself. Pay attention to your body and health, and get attention for any condition that threatens to become chronic.
BACK TO TOP Libra (SEPT 23 - OCT 22):
With Capricorn and Scorpio vibes predominating, you are primarily trying to make money, act with integrity and keep home and family on an even keel. The new and full moons of the 2d and 18th can certainly bring out tendencies to isolate(at home) or to bury yourself in work. Either quality needs re-balancing now. You could find yourself in a battle over money or ethics the 2d week of January. Frankly, ego may play a large part in this one. Search yourself, look for safe ways to vent, and discuss your views with any involved party. Just try not to place blame before you know the truth. As Venus and Mars move into Sagittarius and the Sun moves into Aquarius (the 8th, 18th and 21st), a lighter and more fun vibration begins to take over. The last week, a conjunction of the Sun and Neptune can cloud judgment, so be more cautious than normally, especially in romantic matters.
BACK TO TOP Scorpio (OCT 23 - NOV 22):
You’re in a serious, ambitious mode. A teaching or speaking engagement can help your image. The 2d week of the month, Mars in your sign square Uranus in Aquarius is stressful, perhaps augmented by built-up anger and emotion. This is a good time to clear up old misunderstandings, forgive and move on. Most importantly, you want to vent anger safely. Swimming could really help too, if health permits. You’re quite focused on making money the second half of the month. Aquarius Sun beginning the 21st slowly brings an emphasis on home, hearth and family. By then, you may wonder what all the fuss was about! Take stock around the house, see what needs to be added, repaired or taken away. You won’t really miss that torn underwear, those holey socks, that chipped dishware, will you? Take care of your health this period, especially lungs and reproductive system. Don’t let obvious problems go unassisted.
BACK TO TOP Sagittarius (NOV 22 - DEC 19):
Scorpio energies provide support and a guardian angel presence as Capricorn energies keep you on the track, on the routine. The new and full moons this month (the 2d and 18th) may bring up questions related to finances, investments, insurance and shared monies. The second week of the month, Mars square Uranus can bring up anger, made worse by unforgiven old wounds and just plain nervous tension. All of these areas need gentle care and mature handling. Vent anger safely, employing exercise as a vent if needed. Those born around the 10th and 16th are especially vulnerable to this anger. With Mercury retrograde, be mindful of keeping the checkbook balanced. Watch out for petty thievery–guard your car and wallet. Venus moves into your sign on the 8th, bringing increased attention and positive public image. Mars moves into your sign on the 18th, increasing activity and assertiveness. Late January finds you busy and having fun! Be grounded to balance out a spacey quality the last week. Health wise, your back and kidneys may be vulnerable–address serious problems immediately.
BACK TO TOP Capricorn (DEC 20 - JAN 19):
Beginning of the month, Scorpio and Capricorn energies are supportive, comfortable (water and earth are compatible to you), rooted in the “now” and geared toward the future. A new moon in your sign on the 2d is significant, and predicts a new start in some personal way. Mid-month, you are oddly protected (angels?) but the worst side of you is sometimes in the forefront. Stress in friendships, a difference in goals or money matters can be areas of discontent. Try to communicate in a less defensive way, and vent anger in a safe manner. Late January, you seem to be back on track, taking care of the routine needs and making money. Integrity and values are important assets. We’re a bit spacey late month, so be particularly aware of valuables, your wallet, etc. Emphasize good nutrition, fresh foods and fiber this month. Digestion could be an area of difficulty, and quick resolution is needed.
BACK TO TOP Aquarius (JAN 20 - FEB 19):
Communication with children and other loved ones is of utmost importance this month. Honesty is required, although telling all may not be the right thing either. Be open, maintain the healthiest balance possible. There’s a focus on friendships and goals early month, and many doors will open in these areas. An investment of time or money can certainly pay off! Travel, spirituality and romance look confusing mid-month. Utilize your common sense and intuition when planning a trip. Remember the past, honor the present, look to the future where romance is concerned. You can really overdo it socially late month, and need to be aware of your limits.
BACK TO TOP Pisces (FEB 20 - MAR 19):
Prevailing Scorpio and Capricorn energies are compatible for you (water and earth). Move toward goals, travel, enjoy nature and spirituality, mingle with friends, discuss dreams. Do be aware that planetary movement during the 2d week is quite stressful, asking you to clear out anger safely and move confidently into the future. Resentment toward in-laws or imagined hurts can be part of the problem. Remember, we don’t always know the whole truth about situations. Honesty and forgiveness are key here. The new and full moons of the 2d and 18th can bring up questions related to love and friendship. Seek resolution and balance. Late January can be a much more social time. Your spaciness is accentuated, however, so you must make an effort to be aware and remain grounded (centered). Health wise, the respiratory system and stomach are vulnerable. Don’t let an acute situation drag on.
